1.11 -- Final Submission EXP1

[3D Model Views & Sections]

The final concept was conceived after much deliberation and planning.  From the initial sketches completed in week 1, I further developed such ideas by creating a few draft models using google sketchup.  After choosing two different staircases to meet the criteria of the two clients, Jiro Ono and Antonio Stradivari, I took concept #2 to a higher resolution by adding texture and filling in the interior whilst maintaining a solid and reasonable exterior.  By applying my knowledge of simple engineering mechanics, I decided to create a solid foundation with which the building would sit on.  What is most noticeable as one enters the building via the 45 degree glass panels in a welcoming gesture, is the accessibility to the display showroom.  Situated directly in front on a raised platform, visitors are able to freely walk around and inspect such works in a well adjusted environment.  A glass panel on the rear of the building not only allows natural light in to illuminate the end products, but also for bystanders to be invited into the showroom.

Making our way upstairs to Ono's workshop, one can notice the unique shape of the staircase.  It was deliberately designed in the shape of a fish, though comically.  This alludes to the products made by Ono, with the material being of a wooden nature to mirror the boards on which the sushi would be ultimately displayed.  In terms of the workspace, there is a kitchen bench where products can be crafted, while natural lighting made possible through the use of tinted glass enables a sensible environment.  On the other hand, Stradivari's workshop is situated below the datum yet not directly underneath the building in a concrete/stone composite basement.  The cool air combined with the quiet workshop environment allows him to test musical notes to his desire without distractions from the outside world, hence the lack of windows and public access. The stairs coming down are in a simple circular fashion around a column of reinforced steel to resist buckling, alluding to the beauty of Stradivari's violins and materiality.

This layout also allows the public to enter the showroom platform, yet separates it from the stairs into the workshops since it should only be a staff accessible area.  Subsequently, the placement of both workshops have been justified with respect to the chosen key words:

Client A - Jiro Ono: Natural (adj.), presentation (n.), craft (v.)

Client B - Antonio Stradivari: Spacious (adj.), balance (n.), resonate (v.)
