News Article Mashup

How should the architects of tomorrow learn?  In an age of frontier technologies and open-source prototyping, the future is about rethinking the discipline as a dynamic system of relationships.  Architecture is always about combining a lot of knowledge…knowledge of technology, economy, aesthetics and social issues. However, at the end of the day, a consumption-driven society will always long for something new. Hence it is possible that, by mixing architecture, engineering, product design and interaction, it expects fluency in methodologies from future designers.  The possibilities became even more dizzying with the introduction of new materials and building technologies. As the role of engineering became ever more prestigious, a seductive idea arose: perhaps architectural excellence could be reduced to function. These relationships blur the distinctions between digital and physical, natural and artificial, simulated and observable in the wild. Such an interpretation calls for broader collaborations and a commitment to explorations outside established “comfort zones,” developing a stronger understanding of the possibilities of the digital construction and design process.  In the face of daunting challenges, these projects had to advance well beyond contemporary practices and are now seen as precursors – respectively – to form-finding approaches, computational structural analysis and integrated designing of complex geometries.  It seems likely that in the future, increasing proportions of situated social life will be sustained by digital technologies that have been designed and produced outside of architecture, and this is because within architecture, engineering design and planning, there are always several simultaneous realities. This is where one has to quote William Gibson: “The future is already here — it’s just not very evenly distributed.”

2.06 -- Final Submission EXP2

After thorough research into the given clients, Yakov Chernikhov and Weiss/Manfredi, the two concepts chosen are as follows:

"Perspective lines are the generator of form"
AND
"Overlapping geometric forms create new structure"

My understanding then enabled me to draft up a design that represents both architects in a distinct way that connects and enhances the monument.  While these ideas were taken from A3 and B1 (see section 2.02), the final outcome results from a combination of the two architectural themes.  Hence, once the sense of integrating it with the landform became clear, the two original concepts were then combined and rewritten to form an Electroliquid Aggregation:

"The layering of geometric structure generates form through perspective."

An aerial shot provides a sense of integration between the two chosen concepts to form one continuous idea and monument

Close up of the rocky terrain while the sun is high up (noon time setting) to provide insight into the landscape on which the monument is situated on.

A second aerial shot from a northerly direction exposes the way the monument is implemented in to the terrain to form part of the landscape.  This creates a sense of unity between an artificial structure and the natural world around it.

Late afternoon: shot reveals the layering nature of the Weiss/Manfredi part of the monument to compliment the chosen concept, as well as the meeting space on a level piece of higher ground.

A nightime view is enhanced by the moonlight to show that while the monument is situated on rocky terrain adjacent to a deep chasm, the perspective nature of the elongated platform points towards the water's edge where it can be viewed on the lookout tower.

Slight close up to show applied light effects on the meeting space.

Placement Ideas

Other ideas relating to the surroundings include a mountainous terrain comprised primarily of a green and earthy soil texture and situated within a rocky landscape.  In order to justify such choices, one can simply understand the overuse and cliche nature of a water environment.  To prevent my final monument from falling victim to such a mainstream design, I plan to deliberately place my concept away from the water's edge and onto higher ground for a better vantage point.
